art:house | art + design festival If, like most of us - you missed out on Big Day Out tickets this Australia Day weekend once again due to that un-Australian art of scalping... we've got something special for you to do right here in your own backyard... Benedict House, Queanbeyan is the venue for art:house holding their first month long summer festival; celebrating art + design in the local region. The art:house | art + design festival incorporates four themes - view:culture | design:life | art:women | future:colour and a range of group exhibitions and workshops encompassing visual art, photography, illustration and graphic design. Held at Benedict House in Queanbeyan the festival brings together emerging artists and designers in a program that will showcase and celebrate our regions creative talents. On the Australia Day weekend visit the view:culture and the design:life exhibitions. Both group exhibitions open on 23 January 2009 from 6pm and feature local artists, designers and photographers. We're yet to experience a Poetry Slam - and are more than slightly curious what it might entail, but you (like us) can check out Traverse Poetry in the Benedict House courtyard for pocket change. For more information, check it out here.

Tell someone who cares for 100 beans Hate what we've been dribbling in the pages of Orphan? Can't be bothered with the whole pen to paper theory to send us a whiny letter about it? We promise we can handle it. Send letters to editor@orphanmagazine.com.au to be in the running. Peace and Love

Issue One hits the Streets Orphan Issue One has finally hit the streets, with some help from our friends at Ha Ha Bar in Belconnen and Little Creatures. Friday night saw another massive turnout from the Canberra creative community, with Ha Ha packed so tight you could barely turn the pages of Issue One. The latest edition; Issue One is now in stores now, be quick and take home your own little Orphan before they're all gone. We'll take a break for the next few weeks - our Playstation and table tennis table have been severely neglected. In the meantime, we'd love all the contributors out there to send us some examples of work, and help us put Issue Two together. A big thankyou to all the advertisers and contributors for helping put this issue together, and especially to Ha Ha Bar in Belconnen and Little Creatures beer for putting on such a great launch. See you all next time!
Please Sir, May I have some more? It took a while (we know, we heard the rumours too), but we're back—spoon-feeding you the best in arts, music and culture that Canberra has to offer. Come down to Ha Ha Bar on the 14th of November to get your serve of Issue One.

The Ripe Collective Exhibition An element of mystery surrounds The Ripe Collective's inaugural exhibition on 5 June. All Orphan knows is what has been disclosed by the Collectives viral campaign. Apparently, the exhibition "showcases their innovative and creative approach to a sustainable arts philosophy by engaging the community through a commercial art design practice". Intrigued? So are we. Get on down to The Front Café and Gallery in Lyneham (Wattle Street) at 6.30pm. Scope out some of the Ripe Collectives portfolio here: www.theripecollective.comOrphan's pick for flicks Now that winter has truly set in, there's something very cozy about the idea of shunning nights out on the town for nights spent in the cinema. With a great looking winter line-up, the Arc Cinema at the National Film and Sound Archive is the place to be. Orphan's top cinematic picks for staying warm this May/June are: Don't Look Back (1967) – Screening on 24 May 2008 Joy Division (2007) – Screening on 7 June 2008 Contempt (1963) – Screening on 19 June 2008 For more information on what's screening at the National Film and Sound Archive in May/June, scope out: http://www.nfsa.afc.gov.au/whats_on/
Luuk - Fashion Local t-shirt label, Luuk, was launched in early April. The debut collection from Luke Chiswell includes four original designs which have all been hand screen printed. www.luuk.com.au A 2Xxcellent Radio Bash If you're looking for something to do this weekend, and want to check out some of Canberra's local talent, we'll see you down at the Front Gallery Saturday. This weekend they're holding the '2XX-cellent Radio Bash' to showcase some of Canberra's local talent. ‘A 2XX-cellent Radio Bash’ is a special all ages, drug-and-alcohol-free event, packed with music from three local bands and two local soloists, as well as video displays and stalls promoting active and healthy activity by young skateboard designer Ben Lewis and his new company London Tea. The event, organised by Marianne Mettes in partnership with 2XXfm and Youth Week, will be held on Saturday, April 12, 5pm until 9pm at The Front Gallery and Cafe in Lyneham, as part of the National Youth Week 08 celebrations starting this week. There will be something for people of all ages and tastes. The event will feature performances by some of Canberra’s most promising young musicians. ‘A 2XX-cellent Radio Bash’ is set to kick off with the reggae and soul sounds of The Andi & George Band and finish with a bang by locally renown rambunctious, hardcore performers, Inflatable Ingrid. Other artists booked inlude singer/songwriter Tim Maloney, folk pop rock Heidi Gill and sibling duo Marianne & Jonathan Mettes.
Semi-Permanent 2008 It was great to see a large number of Canberra's designers and artists make the pilgrimage to Sydney for the annual Semi-Permanent design conference. The event saw some super-talented artists, designers, animators and studios present their wares to an eager crowd of over 2,500. Some of the highlights were Alex Trochut's freakish attention to detail and love of type; Lifelounge Magazine were a standout with Jamie Driver showing why they're on top of their game, Debaser's duo prove you don't need to be able to sing to claim an Aria... and the talented war photographer; Spencer Platt (although rather cold) really left me questioning my career choice. Check out some of the artists and speakers here: I'm off to make amends with my liver...
National Youth Self Portrait Prize 2008 Whether it's showcasing the buttock caressing hot-pants of Kylie Minogue or the black and white 'decisive moments' captured by Henri Cartier-Bresson – the National Portrait Gallery is one of those Canberra institutions which rarely disappoints. Since its inception, The National Portrait Gallery has focussed on young people as both art makers and audiences. The winning entry for the inaugural National Youth Self Portrait Prize 2008 was announced today (Friday 28 March 2008) at the National Portrait Gallery, Old Parliament House, Canberra. The National Portrait Gallery sought entries that reflect a broad interpretation of self portraiture from a cross-section of young people. Entrants were invited to create a self portrait in any of the following media: drawing, print, painting, traditional or digital still photography. Jessica Herrington won for her self-portrait titled 'Awkward Self'. The digital print puts a unique spin on self-portraiture by depicting Herrington trying to put on a pink, blue and black sweater. And Orphan think's its hot. The short listed works will be exhibited alongside Jessica's winning entry in the National Portrait Gallery until 27 April 2008. So, don't be an April fool – go and scope it out. Open to all Australian residents between 18 to 25 years of age, the National Youth Self Portrait Prize is intended to be an annual event. Orphan reckons you should keep an eye out because the next call for entries will commence in September of this year. The finalists’ works will be exhibited in July 2009, in the new National Portrait Gallery building, opening December 2008.
Orphan Magazine Launch The evening of Friday the 14th of March saw an assortment of ladies, gentleman, hipsters, vagrants, misfits and fashionistas make their way to Impressions on Paper Gallery in Braddon for the official launch of Orphan Magazine. The heat of the day hung in the night air like a maxi dress worn with no belt and the warmth of the crowd's generosity helped to further raise the temperature. Parched throats were quenched with sangria provided by our good friends at Lexington Music, while appetites were satisfied by canapés provided by Delissio Brasserie. All the while, feet tapped and heads nodded to the smooth beats of DJ D'Opus. A big thanks to all of you who came along to adopt Orphan Magazine as your free quarterly street press – you made it a great night. The reception we've had to Issue Zero has been fantastic.
